Which Audio Plugins Support OSC Natively? The 2026 List
By Hagai Davidoff, Steinberg Certified Trainer, composer and sound designer
Short answer: very few. As of October 2026, I could verify four plugins that take OSC directly, with nothing in between: Surge XT, the IEM Plug-in Suite, Expert Sleepers Silent Way and Spectdrum. Two more, SPARTA and the Spat Revolution plugins, use OSC for one narrow job. For everything else you need a bridge, or a DAW that speaks OSC on its own.
Here's the fact behind this list. Cubase, the DAW I teach, has no general OSC support. None. So if you want to play a plugin from a tablet in Cubase, the OSC has to live inside the plugin. I checked every candidate I could find against its own documentation, and every entry below links to the source.
What "native OSC" actually means
OSC (Open Sound Control) is a network protocol for music software. Where MIDI sends numbered messages in 128 steps, OSC sends named messages with full-resolution values, over your network. A tablet across the room can talk straight to your computer.
A plugin supports OSC natively when it opens its own network port and understands the messages by itself. Point TouchOSC, Open Stage Control or any other OSC app at that port and you're in control.
Why does this matter? A bridge can only reach what your DAW exposes as automation parameters. A plugin with native OSC can expose things no host parameter ever touches: single sequencer steps, drawn envelopes, pattern slots. The good ones also send their state back, so the controller in your hand always matches what you hear.
The list: plugins with OSC built in
Surge XT (free synth)
My pick for the best OSC implementation in any free plugin. Since version 1.3, Surge XT has full two-way OSC, with its own incoming port, outgoing port and target IP in an OSC Settings window. The menu even offers a TouchOSC template to download. It's all in the Surge XT manual.
IEM Plug-in Suite (free spatial audio plugins)
Every plugin in the IEM suite has OSC. Each one listens on a port you choose and can send its changed parameters to any IP and port, with addresses like `/PluginName/parameter`. It's built for Ambisonics, there's no ready-made surface, and the documentation on the IEM OSC page is refreshingly clear.
Expert Sleepers Silent Way (CV and modular)
Silent Way controls modular synths with CV from your DAW. OSC has been part of it for years. Version 2 added the Learner plugin and a quick TouchOSC setup, with control in both directions, and there's a separate CV To OSC plugin that turns voltages into OSC messages (a lovely idea if you live in Eurorack). See the Expert Sleepers site.
Spectdrum 2.60 (multiband gate sequencer)
Full disclosure: this one is mine. Spectdrum splits any sound into four frequency bands and gives each band its own step sequencer. In version 2.60 I built a two-way OSC server into the plugin, because I wanted to play it with my fingers, on the touch screen next to my desk.
It reaches what MIDI mapping never could. Every step, with its on/off state, velocity and gate length. The envelopes, the pattern slots, the pattern dice, presets and transport. A ready-made TouchOSC surface comes with it: it lands in your Documents folder the first time Spectdrum opens, and a button in Preferences takes you there. Out of the box it only listens to your own computer; one switch in Preferences lets a tablet or phone on your network in.
Special-purpose OSC
SPARTA's binaural plugins accept head-tracker data over OSC (GitHub). Great for that, useless for general control. The Spat Revolution plugins use OSC to talk to the separate Spat engine, which in turn takes OSC from desks and controllers (FLUX docs).
Checked and ruled out: Cardinal, the VCV Rack plugin, has OSC only in its standalone and headless builds, so not inside your DAW. Pianoteq has no OSC at all. Modartt went with a JSON-RPC API instead.
Which DAWs speak OSC?
If the plugin doesn't, the host might.
REAPER: native two-way OSC as a control surface. You can shape it completely and bind OSC messages to actions and FX parameters. (REAPER OSC)
Ardour: native, under Control Surfaces, with feedback. (Ardour manual)
Bitwig Studio: nothing built in, but the free DrivenByMoss extension adds it. (DrivenByMoss)
Ableton Live: also not built in. AbletonOSC, a free Remote Script, covers Live 11 and later. (AbletonOSC)
Cubase: the head-tracking server in the Head Tracking window is its only OSC feature. For anything else you're on MIDI Remote or a bridge.
People are usually surprised by the Cubase answer. I was too, the first time I went looking for an OSC setting in the preferences.
No native OSC anywhere? The bridge route
A bridge sits between your controller and your DAW and turns OSC into MIDI. On the Mac, OSCulator has done this for years, and it can fire key commands too. Open Stage Control is free and open source and builds controllers that run in a browser. And TouchOSC can skip OSC entirely and send plain MIDI, with TouchOSC Bridge carrying it to your computer (Hexler docs).
It works. The price is 7-bit resolution and mapping every control by hand, and nothing the host doesn't expose as a parameter is ever within reach.

FAQ
Do VST plugins support OSC?
Some do. VST and AU have no OSC of their own, so each developer has to build it in. The ones I could verify in 2026: Surge XT, the IEM Plug-in Suite, Expert Sleepers Silent Way and Spectdrum.
What is the difference between OSC and MIDI?
MIDI sends numbered messages, mostly in 128 steps, over a cable or a virtual port. OSC sends named messages with full-resolution values over a network. Inside a plugin, OSC can reach controls that MIDI mapping can't.
Does Cubase support OSC?
Not for general control. Its only OSC feature is the head-tracking server. To use OSC with Cubase, you need a plugin with native OSC or a bridge that converts OSC to MIDI.
Can I control plugins from an iPad with TouchOSC?
Yes, if the plugin speaks OSC. Point TouchOSC at the plugin's port, on the same computer or over your network. Surge XT offers a TouchOSC template, and Spectdrum ships with a ready-made surface.
Is TouchOSC free?
No, it's a paid app from Hexler, on desktop, iOS and Android. Open Stage Control is the free alternative.
Do I need a bridge app for OSC?
Only when neither the plugin nor the DAW has OSC.

The moment that sold me on OSC was tapping a step on a tablet and hearing a pad snap into a groove under my finger. Spectdrum's free demo is the full plugin, TouchOSC surface included, so you can have that moment tonight.
